BROADWAY FOR ORLANDO

A chorus of Broadway celebrities raised their voices in song in response to the June 12, 2016 Orlando shooting massacre, at the time the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Sara Bareilles, Carole King, Gloria Estefan, Audra McDonald, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie Perez, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Fran Drescher, Joel Grey, Sarah Jessica Parker and dozens more gathered June 15 at Avatar Studios to sing a benefit single of “What the World Needs Now is Love.” Playbill captured the moment for an accompanying music video of the song, which is produced by Seth Rudetsky, James Wesley and Van Dean of Broadway Records

The single reached #1 on the iTunes music charts, made the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and spawned many hip-hop remixes - one of which received a star-studded music video. Some of the original cast of Broadway for Orlando traveled to the city of Orlando in July of 2016 and gave a powerful and healing concert at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts for the local Orlando community.

The group gave performances of the single at many events, including on NBC's "The Maya and Marty Show," at the New York City LGBT Pride March, and at the Democratic National Convention.
